Burrell, I am so sorry. Peace to you and your family.
I didn't get to sleep until 4, and then a guy called at 8:30, so I had to get up and dressed. (Forgot to take the bra off the stairs, whoops.)
Right now, I'm still conscious and surprisingly cheerful, but that may not last.
I have a peculiar curse -- the inverse relationship between how expensive an umbrella is and how long I can keep it. If I bought a $40 umbrella it would disappear within a week. Given a cheap umbrella as a giveaway (or once, buying a $2 umbrella in a secondhand store because I needed it right there that moment) and I have the use of it for years.
Theo, that's what happens to me. Although I haven't lost an expensive umbrella in the last year or so because I don't ride the train that much these days.
When I was working in New York, you could always buy a $3 umbrella on the street or in Penn Station. I've never had a *good* umbrella.

Yeah, I almost never bother carrying an umbrella in advance. If it's raining, there's going to be someone selling $2 umbrellas on the corner. Which will work exactly long enough for me to get home dry-ish, at which point it will either break or I will lose it.
I'm so sorry, Burrell. I hope you can get some rest soon.
I have an ugly brown and beige umbrella that was a work giveaway back in the '80s. Better umbrellas have come and gone, but I can't manage to lose that one.
I miss that about DC. As soon as it started drizzling the umbrella guys would come out and you could grab one for $5. Doesn't happen in Chicago.
I have many umbrellas though. I try to keep at least one in the office and car and have some little ones that can go in a purse. I have a clear dome one for dog walking which is awesome.
I'm so sorry for your loss, Burrell. Sending strength and love out to you and your family and your sister's friends.
