What sort of training does refugee resettlement require? It sounds tremendously useful. The whole thing is probably pretty complex.
I'm going to be assisting with the English classes, and I'll be going next week to learn more specifically about what I'll be doing. So far, I've just done the child abuse prevention training -- the refugee resettlement program is run by Catholic Charities, and the Catholic Church has a whole program on child abuse prevention that everyone has to do before volunteering or working with kids.
Basically, once refugees are accepted for moving to the US, the government decides which city they'll go to, and then, within each of those cities, there are non-profits that work with the refugees to help them get settled, find housing and jobs, get the kids registered in schools, and basically learn how to live in America. There are nine non-profits that do that work, and different ones have branches in different cities, and here in Cincinnati, it's Catholic Charities that does it.
I don't think I'm going to do the voter registration thing. My sinuses are hurting, plus no one's gotten back to me with the details like where to go, specifically, and I really don't feel like wandering the entire Pride festival looking for them.
Also crazy people with guns and it's going to be hotter than the surface of the sun. (I have mad respect for the drag queens when it's this hot and humid for Pride.)
Hil, sorry for the sinus misery and disorganization of the Pride voter registration thing. The volunteering this summer sounds wonderful.
askye, I'm sorry you had to deal with lack of A/C when it has been so hot and humid. Not relaxing at all.

Whaaaaaaat. Pictures!!!!!
So excited. DH's brother's BIL is a renowned chef and stuff so we are going to his restaurant for the first time. Excited about that too. [link] But not as excited as I am to see Aims and Em because really I could eat Pouchon's food anytime, I just haven't been to his restaurant since it is 2-1/2 hours away in Kissimmee.
The last time DH saw Aimee she was pregnant and she ran and jumped up in his arms. I should conspire with her for a repeat.
I'm almost done getting certified and background-checked to help resettle refugees.
Hil, that's awesome.
askye, I'm sorry you had such a sucky day, but glad you're feeling better. Hope you get your rest time finally.
I need to stop working and go do something fun. Tonight is Board Game Night, but I don't think I'll go. They moved the venue and it's such a long way now, and the new digs are not as comfortable, and... I guess I just don't feel like it. If I really wanted to go, none of the rest would matter.
I went to grandma's and my aunts...well really it's my aunt for the weekly Friday pizza night. Every Friday they, my aunts "great friend" as Grandma E calls him (aka my aunt's boyfriend but she's 64 and he's 72 and it seems weird to say boyfriend ) and whatever family member decides to drop by eat pizza and watch either BBC cozy mysteries or bad Sci fi.
And then I spent the night and spent longer talking than I planned. I'm back at the beach cottage in the ax with my tiny view of the water. When it gets closet to sunset I'll venture out for a walk. The heat index is over 100.
