I booked my Christmas tickets yesterday. I love my family but dear god it's expensive. What's ridiculous is that it's almost as expensive for me to get there as it is for my brother to get there from Europe! Though he generally takes enough time that he is home for three weeks or so and beats most of the Christmas traffic.

Check out Penske, I've used them instead of U-Haul, they are one-way with unlimited miles. If you're renting an SUV type of vehicle, I'd go with a cargo van. Easier to drive than a moving truck; will hold more stuff than an SUV. A ten-foot truck will carry all your stuff if you live in a one or two bedroom apartment. You can also rent blankets from the rental place to wrap around furniture so it won't be damaged; you return them with the truck.

Moving vans can be tricky to drive, it's not impossible but get used to how it handles before you hit the road, and remember you need a lot more space to stop in.

I've never used Pods, but they would be easier in that you wouldn't have to drive the van. Going by a friend's experience, you may end up in your new space without your stuff for a couple days, though.

Zen, I'd like to do the cargo van but I can't find a place that rents cargo vans for one way trips. It may just be here in Vermont it's an issue. I'm going to call around and see what the options are. But I've looked at all the major moving companies and the car rental places and from what I've been able to find for a one way, out of state trip it's either renting a large SUV or a 10' moving van as the smallest options.

When I moved up here from Florida I used UHual's pod thing and ended up without my stuff for a week because there wasn't something in my town (even though I was told there was) and the place the Uhaul pod was there was only 1 trailer to move it and someone else hadn't returned it yet. So about a week without my stuff.

Although poking around I've found some cheaper car rentals that would mean it would cost about the same to move by van or by the Ubox system.
