"There are few hours in life more agreeable than the hour dedicated to the ceremony known as afternoon tea."

Has anyone here dropped cable? Is there anyway to do that and watch local channels as well as cable news shows without a cable box?

I've done it. For local channels, you can get an antenna, but that depends on how good your reception is -- where I live, all the channels are broadcast from the other side of a mountain, and antennas are fairly useless, but for people in less mountainous areas, you can get local channels that way. Which particular cable news shows do you want to see?

this mess was yours / now your mess is mine

If your local stations have digital signals (and I assume they all do), and your TV is new enough (by "new" I actually mean "built in the last 10 years, maybe even longer"), the TV will have a digital tuner that should pick up the local stations.

Melissa Harris Perry, Fareed Zakaria, and Anthony Bourdain's show on CNN.

I think we bought our TV about 6 years ago. How do I know if it has a digital tuner? t /clueless

Tonight's dinner: Spaghetti squash in a pink mascarpone sauce with basil, chicken, and peas. I made the sauce and roasted the spaghetti squash. TCG will heat up the chicken and peas.

Not so nice is that I'm about to ruin a Friday morning for a bunch of people because of a series of unfortunate events and an upset foreign government. - shrift

sj, that sounds delicious.

You usually have to be a subscriber to view that content online. I think the basic cable packages carry the news stations, so you may be able to at least drop down.

Your TV has a digital tuner, but you'll probably need an antenna to pick up the signal. It all depends on your sightless to the station's towers.

Thanks! I figured out that if I added milk or cream it would have to count toward my carbs, but the mascarpone doesn't. The only thing I have to count toward my carb load for the meal are the peas.

Thanks, even the most basic plan doesn't drop down the price that much. Cable companies are just so frustratingly expensive, and our current package is about to go up $30 a month.

brillig

I have only antenna TV and watch shows online. I read my news, because I can pick up a lot more information reading compared to listening to people talk and make commentary and waste time on fluff and sports.

Yeah, I just called my cable company yesterday--in the past they've had options where I could sign up for a year of some bundle and lower the price, or drop something or whatever...this time they were like "Well, you could drop Starz? That's $5 a month. Or, um, lower your internet speed by half, but that's also only $5/month savings..." Grrreat. Am trying to figure out if I really need/want cable all that much. I may drop it for the summer.
