Sometimes I think I might just move up to Vermont, open a bookstore or a vegan restaurant. Adam Schlesinger, z''l

Adults don't always get the whoop sound -- it's more common in kids, because their airways are narrower. What you're describing does sound a lot like what I had when I had pertussis. I'd say go to the doctor and specifically ask about it. If he said to come back in a few days, and you've already gone through all the medicine he gave you, then I'd say it's time to go back. The vaccine for pertussis isn't great -- it's better than nothing, but only about 70 or 80% of people who get it are fully protected. (As opposed to somewhere between 95 and 97% for the measles vaccine.) It could be something else, but whatever it is, if you're that miserable, let the doctor know.

I know they tested me for the flu and something else, but I don't remember. I'll call tomorrow and specificlly ask if they can test for this.

Every now and then, I think I might actually be a little odd.

askye, I second the rec to have them check for pertussis; that was the first thing I thought of when you described it. Also worth noting, that cough without the whoop is what I sound like when my asthma's not controlled. Like you describe, I have uncontrollable coughing fits that make it hard to catch my breath and sometimes are so bad I gag. So maybe have them check you for asthma too. Even if you don't have asthma, an inhaler might help.

I have a history of astham (exercised induced and as a kid I got it around Christmas it was determined to be an allergy to the christmas trees and stuff). I have an inhaler and I've been using it. Actually missed a prescribe dose so I just went and used it after your post reminded me.

Oh,man. I just found out my roommate's mother died yesterday. We knew it was going to be soon, but you know how it is;it's always sudden. I just feel like a jerk; I've been enjoying the local comic con and haven't checked in with her on how her mom was doing. N. works nights so she's usually asleep when I'm up. She could use a little ~ma sent her way and the Fresno area for her family.

See? I gave everybody here an opportunity to tell me what a bad person I am and nobody did, because I fuckin' rule.

Thirding asking your doc to double-check for asthma and pertussis. And, oh I am so sorry. I went through several months of coughing-wheezing-rib-wrenching hell before getting the asthma diagnosis -- which I thought had been ruled out years before. So never mind what you think might have been previously yes or no'd, or any previous shots or anything you think has already been ruled out; no matter how sure you are, it doesn't hurt and may help a ton to ask your docs to check and re-check again.

eta: Just saw your post - never mind the asthma, but definitely ask them to check on pertussis and reconfirm yea or nay.

I have an appointment at 11:15. Will is coming over to take me. When I called I talked to a nurse who heard me cough and asked if I'd need tested for pertussis.

So that's getting down. I called work.

Before all of that I had a complete anxiety attack. I had thoughts about hurting myself mostly so someone would believe me. This is triggering huge massive emotions from when I was a kid being taken from doctor to doctor trying to figure out what was wrong with me and feeling like no one believed me.

I did call my therapist. I'm pretty sure the crying is not helping things.
