Good luck with your prodigal son, Laura. You've got to believe he'll get back on track eventually. He's a good person.
Spike's Bitches 48: I Say, We Go Out There, and Kick a Little Demon Ass.
[NAFDA] Spike-centric discussion. Lusty, lewd (only occasionally crude), risqué (and frisqué), bawdy (Oh, lawdy!), flirty ('cuz we're purty), raunchy talk inside. Caveat lector.
Guys, I feel the need to share my secret shame with you...Oh, BTW, Hi, Everybody!...so, yeah, secret shame. I was listening to NPR this morning and a Dr being interviewed pronounces a word basically the way it's spelled, instead of correctly. I'm embarrassed for the guy and think how humiliating that would be to mispronounce a word in front of however-many listeners on the radio. So when I get to work I look it up on Dictionary.com, trying to give him the benefit of the doubt, thinking maybe it's an alternate pronunciation. And it turns out he pronounced it correctly...AND I'VE BEEN SAYING IT WRONG! Who knows how many times (probably not that many, it's not that common a word) over how many years! THE SHAME! Do not forsake me, fellow Word Lovers!
...And deserving of a separate post, much ~ma for your Mom, Callaluna.
Laura, that does sound hard. I'm so sorry you're having to deal with this, but it does sound like you're handling it the best way you can. {{Laura}}
So what's the word??
Thanks all. I believe he will wake up some day and want a better life, but it hasn't happened yet. I'm going to see again if he'll go stay with his aunt and uncle in Fort Lauderdale. They have a baby, but seem to be willing to take him on too.
I just sat outside for a while and watched the sunset. It was beautiful, but between my mind racing and the dog barking it was not so relaxing.
The word dramatic pause is satiety. Which I've always pronounced SAY-she-uh-tee, to align with satiated. But no, it's suh-TAY-i-tee. Which I think is dumb-sounding. But whatever.
I don't think I have ever said the word aloud. Huh. I know one I can think of off hand is hyperbole. Although I know how to pronounce it now, I still read it wrong. A few others that I can't think of too.
Callaluna, ~ma for your mom. And buckets of interview ~ma for Strix!
Oh, Laura. Some kids (even at 23) just have no idea what great parents they have (because you and Brendon are wonderful). I can't help but believe that one day, hopefully soon, he gets a good clue-stick to the head and gets his act together.
I don't actually know that I've ever spoken it (wrong) aloud. Maybe my humiliation is from how superior I was feeling. It's one thing just to have never heard a different-from-expected pronunciation, but I was just so certain I was right and he was wrong. Maybe it just stings a bit because language skills are something I take pride in...well, I've been taught a little lesson, I guess. Probably good for me...like broccoli...which I also hate.

It was only a few years ago that I learned how that should be pronounced, so you are not alone! I used to pronounce it "fullness" because I was never sure.
