My official stance as a writing teacher is that there are enough accessible tools and style guides that I no longer need to memorize APA and MLA style. I like MLA way better because that's what I learned originally, but my psych students throw a minor tizzy if I accept anything other than APA. They even balk if I say "don't worry about ALL the formatting rules, I'm not going to lower your grade if you don't use the running header." I've had students blanche in horror at the suggestion.
