I would be more prone to trying the super expensive meat in a restaurant rather than preparing it myself, I think, as it would suck if I got distracted and bunt it up or something. I do go organic and local and delivered to my front door whenever I can (or some combination of those sets, not necessarily an intersection of all three) though, and pay premiums accordingly.

I am beginning to think about interview clothes. A suit seems the right choice, but I am not much of a dress wearer. Does black pants suit seem too, I dunno, waitstaff-ish?
I'm glad to have found that one of the million hipster hair cutteries in LA does a great job on my hair for $30. I used to pay $100.
A friend once treated me to a color and cut at Minardi in New York. I think it was something like $200. (We went together, so it was also an afternoon for us.) My hair looked fine, but the head massage and wine and pampering was really what differentiated from another cut. And S. could do that stuff at home for me for free.
The hair place I loved was $150 for cut and color, which is hugely expensive for this area. Sadly, I just can't fit them into my budget anymore, but I hate every other place I try.
I think a black pants suit is always appropriate, but you could get one that's not black!
I've generally paid about $75 when I was getting fancy haircuts. And some of those were really great, and nothing I've been able to get elsewhere, but sometimes NSM. But lately have been going to a place where it's about $30 pre-tip.

Only if you wear a white shirt under it.
grey suit or brown I think are good.
My current hair place is $50, I think, which I think is medium.

Also, Macy's is having a sale on dresses & suits. I like their selection for that sort of thing better than Nordstrom's.
I suppose I should consider getting a new suit: I last bought one probably five years ago, and both me & the styles have changed. In any event, there's a chance I will be interviewing in the not-too-distant future, so.
(The Navy has put in a hiring freeze, and if other agencies follow suit, I may be screwed. Gotta be prepared.)
