Old movie theaters had a cry booth behind the main floor of the house where parents could take crying children. In live theatre it's an observation booth, usually above the balcony, and the joke is that's where playwrights and directors go to cry during openings. Mostly, it's where the understudies go so they don't disturb audience members by mumbling the lines along with the actors.
