Pull it off of the cross and then get a stand, if you can. It'll live a lot longer. Basically, trees (as living things) need water. If you water it, it'll be happy.

Can you saw it off? It's good to do that anyway.
Do you have any kind of saw? It's usually best to cut a few inches off the tree bottom, so it will take up water better.
