Thanks for the advice on vegetable cooking, all. I may yet learn to feed myself like an adult.
Suzi, sorry for your sucky day, and I hope everything works out well.
Hachi's story is lovely.

I don't think I can plan on vacation time before January, alas. Maybe later, I don't know how payroll is going o account for this coming week off...
I don't eat much like an adult in the summer because we spend 4-5 evenings week at the pool and I am just looking for things that are easy to grill.
The Supreme Court is handing down decisions today @ 10 a.m. - 14 cases left, so we may have two more decision days next week. What's left: [link]
Also, the Big Boss' retirement party (from us; the official school-sponsored party will be in October, and none of us have been invited) is today, so I will have to stand up and make a toast. And then I will crawl under the table.

I will be in the car listening. Come on SCOTUS!
Enjoy the party, Sparky1!
NOLA in August isn't the hottest I've ever seen, but it may be the worst combination of heat, humidity, and concrete reflecting the heat back at you.
The worst heat I remember is driving from Chapel Hill to Greensboro, NC, in August in a car without A/C. For those not familiar with the area, it was about an hour drive. The car did fine. I had to stop twice to cool down.
I often used to tell my DH that that was how much I loved him, I moved to New Orleans in August for him.
I moved to Montreal in the middle of a blizzard in January. From there I moved to Atlanta in August. But by far the worst was moving to DC in July a few years later. Driving into town in my rickety old car in 95 degree swamp conditions - and then hitting DC at about 8PM on July 4. I have never been so miserable.
I will never forget my Alaskan roommate in DC -- he would pretty much be naked by the time he made it home, and I'm pretty sure he moved out in June, so that wasn't even in the summer! Poor boo was so miserable.

Yeah, it wasn't so much the heat (although it was pretty damn hot); it was the WALL of humidity.
I'll never forget being at a hotel in New Orleans in late July, and boggling at how the cold water from the tap was actually lukewarm.
