I can't even think of anything to say except to point out that in a just world--or Australia--the boy wouldn't have been able to get his hands on a gun, in all likelihood.
I had to go to a doctor's appointment this morning, so I was listening to a talk radio DJ talking about the shooting, and the man is vile. Things he said, "Well, of course we don't know anything yet, but clearly this kid had mental illness, probably depression, which is increasing in the US, you know;" "The hospital spokesman said the boy is in critical condition, so we can assume he shot himself in the head;" and my favorite, "This incident better not get the gun control nuts started up, because this is clearly a mental health issue, not a gun issue."
Evil.
I swear to god, if I make it to and through my big meeting tomorrow, it will be a miracle. I
think
I have appeased the VP who was mad at me, but who the fuck knows.
Damn, I scheduled a site visit this afternoon and just realized I don't have a key to get into the building we're looking at. I have left messages for a couple of people, but if they don't get back to me, I shall have to call it off.
How embarrassing.
Also, if you want to continue to mist up over the Jason Collins story, here are other players' reactions: [link]
Twitter's existance is justified.
Aw, great to see it happen. I think the support Collins is going to receive will outweigh the negative opinions by far.
IIRC, guns are two times more likely to be used for suicide than for self-defense/crime, at least as far as what little research has been done has uncovered. It's probably understated what with the "died at home" and other circumlocutions that death notices and families employ in public.
What never gets spoken about in the gun debate that I can see is that guns, the idea of guns, promotes a false sense of safety. (The Texas prosecutor and his wife who were shot by an assailant in their own home had 5 or 6 DOZEN guns at hand, and were well-versed in their use.)
I think the support Collins is going to receive will outweigh the negative opinions by far.
I don't believe that about fans, but I do think so about the athletes that will speak out. I wouldn't have said so when watching...uh, that show that had this storyline last season
t /not spoiling
but on pondering it since, I think it behooves the vocal to be supportive, or it behooves the co-workers to be vocal and supportive.
OK, so what should I get at the Vitamin Shoppe to make sure I get a good night's sleep? I have tried valerian and melatonin, to little or no effect. Anything else I can try?
Jesse, do you take a calcium/magnesium supplement? I take one at bedtime, and it really zonks me out.
