For the me that only lives in my head, I'd like my style to be a mixture of Cher and Morticia and old-school silent film vixens. In reality, my wardrobe is mostly bright-colored resort wear and super-sloungy stuff. Which also suits me. That now strikes me as kind of odd.

Ooooh. I approve. Lots.
I kind of want to wear one of my b&w blazers today, but since I'm going thrift shopping with Dad, it's probably a bad plan.
I'm in the middle of or need of a style re-adjustment right now. Not sure which.

Needs more chaotic evil.
I am having a bit of an image problem at the moment, too. It stems from the hair, kinda. When I have punked out hair, which is most of the time, then the cargo pants and Doc Martens and band t-shirts look kinda makes some sort of cohesive sense, and people are mostly so startled by the hair I don't think they're thinking about the rest of the style much. But now, with longer hair and nail polish and makeup, and lots of donated Life is Good tshirts, well, the clothing now just looks careless.
But when I think about what else I could try to wear, and what I would need to buy to fit in back in midwestern suburbia, it's kinda daunting. I don't think I could do it, and I'm not convinced I want to. But I also don't want to look so...unconcerned.
I have fewer teenagers, so I've been putting less effort into looking rocker, and also I'm aging. The last time I really looked like I fit in was when I went to Phoenix and hung out with my 25 year old former student, both of us all in black in 90 degree weather.
Also I don't want to carry a purse.

Yes, but which kind of chaotic evil? Southwestern (I'm grooving on cowboy hats and aged silver-and-amethyst jewelry right now, or everything these guys have [link] or... what? I'm too old for the punked-out look (though I will hold on to my knee socks 'til the day I die).
Also I don't want to carry a purse.
Purses are only for formal occasions, in my world. But I live in a coat-friendly climate.
The purse is where the wallet, Palm, Nook, keys, flashlight, penknife, coupons, and bag-o-drugs live. I boggle at people who can move through the world without stuff.
Hubby has keys, fat wallet, stray change/tools/nuts and bolts in one pocket, and a folding knife and his own bag-o-drugs in his other pocket. His pants sag a lot. He glares at me when I suggest a manly bag.
You don't have to carry a purse, per se. I've been carrying a backpack of one sort or another for twenty odd years (once I stopped carrying messenger bags).
It is a fabulous business plan. Seriously, I've saved it and everything!
Hey, I get a discount consult for that, right?
I think what I wore today is probably my most consistent look, that goes to work sometimes, and is 50% of my off-work clothes--fitted top (it's the Captain America baby tee again today), miniskirt (blue and purple tartan kilt today, but also sometimes sheath silhouette), opaque tights, and boots (biker today, but also sometimes cowboy or granny).
Still not the cohesivest, but I do feel very comfortable dressed this way.
I carry all that stuff, pretty much, and except for the Nook it all goes in the cargo pockets. The Nook goes in the backpack with the laptop and various music books/clipboards/tuners/metronomes/cables. But I don't always carry the backpack.
I need to buy new pants, and I think I'm going to go with the Duluth firehose cargos, but if I'm not giving up cargo pants, then I don't know how much I can do with the top half of my style to be anything other than what it is now. I guess more fitted tops rather than t-shirts? I can't see myself really starting to accessorize.
