Maria, that's why I am just blocking people from my feed for a while, which is a decision I can revisit later, and they don't need to know I'm no longer seeing their posts.
In my case, these are people I don't know (ah, the fun of being a "public figure"), so I feel no remorse about unfriending them.

No craziness on my FB so far, thankfully,but I don't friend anyone but family and actual friends, so that helps some. There are plenty of Romney supporters, but they're generally not ideologues.

Completely understandable. In my case a few of the people are relatives, and it would start a family kerfuffle if I outright unfriended them. Better to just not see their posts for now.
