So the people they seem to hold in contempt are themselves.

well, at least for the people I know, no. Maybe their neighbors, but it is really usually "others". The people I hear make these arguments are all solidly middle to upper middle class. The people who live on the other side of town, or, more likely, in the city, not the suburbs. Those are the lazy government supported people.

"Look, son, if it's good enough for Shirley Bassey, it's good enough for you."

I wish the government would support me. Where's my socialist state, dammit!

I was told there would be jet packs and socialism.

And then Ortus came and said "It's Ortin' time" and they all Orted off into the sunset

jet packs and socialism.

Now THERE's a steampunk party theme I can get behind!

I just do not understand the seeming jealousy I hear towards people who get government assistance. STuff like "must be nice." "I wish I got medical care for free."

I have tried to have conversations with people about how living at those standards would not be fun or easy or desirable or everyone would be doing it. And it makes no headway it seems. There is just deep resent from the help being forced from them and it coming from government. I know for many of these people I know, they think charitable organizations, specifically churches should be providing all assistance. Despite proof from a gagillion years that the populous will not voluntarily give enough to help those in need. They only see the poor as greedy, not the rich or comfortable.

See? I gave everybody here an opportunity to tell me what a bad person I am and nobody did, because I fuckin' rule.

msbelle, possibly you could get some counter-talking-points from this? Unless, of course, it just makes them more furious. Sigh.

(I started trying to pick out the bits of the essay that really gutpunched me, but I ended up copy-n-pasting practically the whole damn thing, which I took as a clue to myself to shut up, link, and let it speak for itself.)

Sometimes I trip on how happy we could be.

This is Oregon, but was the easiest one to find. [link]

To qualify for TANF, families must have very few assets and little or no income. The current maximum monthly benefit for a family of three is $506.

Boy, yeah, it must be nice. Trying to raise two kids on $500/month -- that's really living the dream.

THIS IS WHY I'M YELLING, PEOPLE.

"There are few hours in life more agreeable than the hour dedicated to the ceremony known as afternoon tea."

BUT THOSE PEOPLE ALWAYS HAVE iPHONES AND DRIVE NEW CARS AND HAVE BRAND NEW SNEAKERS!!

And according to certain relatives of mine on facebook, who are currently blocked, they spend all of that money on smoking, drinking, getting tattoos, getting cable TV, getting manicures, and doing drugs.

Hey, if I had to raise two kids on $500/month I'd probably buy all the alcohol and drugs I could afford too!
