"It didn't taste good. It tasted soooo horrible. It tasted like....a vodka martini." - Matilda

That's basically what's going on in the Temeraire series, except with dragons instead of steampunk tech.

That's true, and there's rather a steampunk air to the way the outfit the dragons.

I haven't read later Moorcock, so in my head Oswald Bastable is still digging for treasure.

Calli: My people have a saying. A man who trusts can never be betrayed, only mistaken.Avon: Life expectancy among your people must be extremely short.

Moorcock always said he named Bastable after the character from the treasure hunters, but he was not supposed to be what the character turned into. The name was a link to a sort of liberal imperialism, the sort that claims to support invasions for the good of the nation being invaded. Of course this is way after the fact analysis. It is possible that the name was picked on a "wouldn't it be cool" basis, and the justification thought of long after.

Librarian Warlord

A message from our local parents' email list has the subject heading, "need someone to deliver uterus plushes to NYC Comic Con." As my DH is headed to NYC tonight, I am trying to convince him to lend these local business people a hand.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

Make a dedicated email address, don't talk about your personal life details, don't tell people you meet in person your handle, etc

They can start with IP addresses and work from there. I'd wager that you have to be purposely hiding, as opposed to just not revealing. Who are you hiding from? Because there's some scary people out there, doing some jackass stuff.

Sometimes I trip on how happy we could be.

Oh sure, if you're hiding from scary people. It sounds like someone just told Adrian Chen who that guy was, though.

Have any laistas gone to see the shuttle? [link] The photos are AWESOME.

Katie and I are going to the Science Center on November 1 for an educator thing when they open the pavilion. I am unaccountably excited.

People who think free speech is synonymous with freedom from consequence make me tired.

The artist formerly associated with cupcakes.

This. THIS! Sure, say whatever you want, just be prepared to deal with what happens after, including being publicly outed and shamed if you're a creepy troll who posts upskirt photos of minors.
