fivethirtyeight.com had an interesting article about, not quite that (though reading between the lines: in 2010, Repubs weren't popular, but Dems were even less so, and nationwide they could get some candidates elected that should never have had a look-in); but about how after the 2010 elections, Republican governors no longer varied in ideology with their state, but were now uniformly conservative - and therefore, in many cases well out of step with their electorate.
