Why did Darth Vader cross the road? To get to the Dark Side!

Noah is adorable. Love the wink. He's such a masher.

Franny has this impecable eyebrow raise, I am SOOO jealous.

I don't have anything rational to add to the discussion about the rape on campus. It reminds me of the church. I feel like that's how that kind of thing happens, there's some kind of knee-jerk reaction to cover things up, as if the harm to the institution is far more worrisome than the harm to the person who has been raped.

Yeah, Burrell, that's the essence of this commentator's take.

JZ was saying the same thing, noting that when the sex abuse scandals hit the Catholic Church back in the 90s, her Mom was very involved with dealing with the issue. A cop who came to talk about it said this situation recurs because there's a mindset to protect the institution over anything else. He said that he'd dealt with the issue in almost every large institution that had regular dealings with kids placed in their care. (Freaky scary that notion.)

Humans suck at the humanity thing sometimes.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

My insomnia problems are two-fold. Falling asleep, and managing wakeups. I tend to have long periods of rolling around listlessly attempting to fall asleep both times. But I'd gotten better at wakeups! The past two weeks weren't bad, the falling back to sleep.

But tonight's the second night I've woken up shockingly wired. My sleep psychologist wants to teach me to manage my thoughts and quiet them, and honestly, that's not my problem. It's my body. It's nearly vibrating with tension, and I don't know how to get it to go away. The relaxation techniques I'm so stupidly good at are just at quieting my brain down.

hip deep in pie

I am a poorly organized sick person. Last night I realized I was out of cold medicine. So I ended up taking a antihistamine I bought for Clio when we were thinking she had allergies. I didn't know how it would work on my stuffed up nose, but I slept like a champ.

This morning, still addled by the antihistamine, I left the house without tissues and my wallet. I have stolen some tissues from my coworker, and fortunately I brought lunch with me, so I won't starve.

And then Ortus came and said "It's Ortin' time" and they all Orted off into the sunset

I had no idea about any of this Penn State stuff. Every detail I hear just makes it more and more sickening.

On a lighter note, from earlier:

Good god, why can't this guy understand that hidden columns don't go away, and the people we're submitting it to aren't idiots. They'll understand (ESPECIALLY IF WE TELL THEM) that there are hidden columns in the spreadsheet. The unhidden ones are the ones we need on the website. The filtered rows are the ones we want on the website. Der. I am not sending them the same spreadsheet twice. I refuse to treat them like they're stupid.

FUCKING SPREADSHEETS, HOW DO THEY WORK?

Sometimes I think I might just move up to Vermont, open a bookstore or a vegan restaurant. Adam Schlesinger, z''l

The Occupy Penn State lounge has added a "Support Joe and Penn State" sign to their collection of signs. They've also added to their list of demands -- they're now demanding that the course evaluations that the students fill out at the end of the semester be made public information. (My last set of evaluations included one who marked me down because I spent too much time erasing the board.) The only consistent demand from them is lower tuition -- everything else seems to change day by day.

Because books.

Penn State is so affordable, especially for in-state students, compared to other colleges. Get real, kids. No one's going to school for pocket change anymore.

The in-state tuition at Penn State is more than the in-state tuition at state schools in a lot of other states, but Penn State also has a much better academic reputation than a lot of those other schools. And I'd have a whole lot more respect for them as an Occupy movement if they seemed at all concerned with the fact that the last round of budget cuts, in addition to raising tuition, also cut quite a few jobs.

Did I apply to Penn State? Or would it have been U of Penn? I cannot remember.

I'm calling in sick today. I'm getting one document submitted to the web team, and that's it. I officially can't cope. I'm fucked.

Amy - Nov 09, 2011 4:52:01 am PST #5526 of 30001
Because books.

UPenn is in Philly, Penn State is out in State College, if that helps you remember.

Sorry about the sick, lady. I hope you can sleep some today.
