"You're occupying a student lounge? With couches and heat and a coffee shop and a food court? Whatever."
Someone should tell those reporters that the point of occupying is not actually suffering. I've been to demonstrations outdoors in beautiful spring whether that included picnic food, plumbed bathrooms in the park, and performance by celebrity musicians. No one thought that made the demonstration less valid. Occupying even a very comfortable place sharing a space with dozens of others for days on end represents a hell of a lot more effort than that Sunday in the park which got a fair amount of coverage.
Stay safe, Tom.
My DH will be at OWS this afternoon doing a teach-in on the arms trade treaty.
The mainstream coverage of OWS is so infuriating to me. Is it so difficult to grasp that people are pissed, feeling powerless, and that this is what they want to do?
What else might you suggest?
Report what people are doing and saying. That would help.
Michelle Duggar is pregnant with her 20th child. If she carries to term, she will have been pregnant with all the children combined a total of 15 years. I don't even know what to say to that.
Wow.
That's certainly something.
Okay, so I am reading a UK news blog and reading the comments because they routinely make me laugh and laugh. I came across this comment:
I heard that he was caught swan upping in an inappropriate skiff.
And I just about died laughing. I had NO idea what this person was saying, but it sounded like a crazy euphemism for something.
I googled it and for heaven sake, "swan upping" is something real! Damn. Much less funny.
If she carries to term, she will have been pregnant with all the children combined a total of 15 years. I don't even know what to say to that.
The idea of being pregnant for 15 years makes me want to cry. Literally.
Heh.
I think this misses the point as well - protesting "economic injustice" is a fairly meaningless thing to do unless you are also proposing some kind of concrete action. (Which IS happening, to some extent, but every single "The mainstream media doesn't get it!" article I've seen about OWS just puts its foot in its mouth by responding with "What's so hard to understand about this movement? They want JUSTICE!" Saying "The mainstream media is so stupid, they can't even understand this totally vague undefined abstract idea!" is NOT HELPFUL, BLOGS.)
