askye, we lived with my MIL for 4 years, taking care of her after her Alzheimer's diagnosis. She was getting increasing isolated, and was spending more and more time in bed watching TV. She wasn't really ready to move to assisted living, but for her, it's the best thing we ever did. Her memory has improved a bit with the classes they have, and above all she has friends, and 24-hour nursing staff on-site. But I have to say my DH felt very guilty, like we were "dumping" her somewhere, so it's a huge decision. Give your Grandma and your dad some time.
Natter 69: Practically names itself.
Off-topic discussion. Wanna talk about corsets, duct tape, or physics? This is the place. Detailed discussion of any current-season TV must be whitefonted.
She goes to class every day, they do crafts and go to the gym, and they have movie night every night. On Saturday's they have a tea and finger sandwiches, and usually have live music and dancing!
I need a Goth-friendly version of this. Right now, actually.
Living. The. Dream.
Seriously! Maybe by the time we actually get around to Buffista Island...

I know! There'd be a cleaning service! And people making meals!
would someone PLEASE win the damn lottery already.
Dammit, I forgot to buy a lottery ticket when I was in PDX last weekend.
Oh, I bet there is (or will be in the near future) call for geeky/goth/subcultural assisted living communities.
Please please let me get through this block.
Relatedly, I met someone who owns a gay club in Seattle with a goth night. Have you guys been to Pony?

Huh? Noooo.
Allyson, would it be worth it to try some five minute writing sprints? What you do is, you set a timer for five minutes and keep your fingers moving on the keyboard. Do not allow yourself to STOP during. This isn't to write stuff to keep, it's just to get the fingers moving and words down on the paper. I've been surprised how much this has helped me, as if I was priming an engine.
My mom's "independent living community" is more like an ocean liner than a dorm, if ships came with cabins that had full-size kitchens and two bathrooms. They get a hot meal once a day as part of their living, but it's restaurant ambiance, with at least three entrees to choose from, waitrons, real china. Plus "on-campus" amenities like a library and game rooms and hobby clubs and classes on just about anything. Plus there's a doctor's office right there, and a dedicated staff of home health aides who will come in and offer assistance, which currently Mom is having to take. If you can get an elderly relative into one of the Erickson communities, move heaven and earth to do it -- they're worth every penny.
