I don't have personal experience, Nora, but Clark Howard recommends Car Warehouse [link] in the UK. He says you can get a phone for a month for about $20, with calling to the U.S. under 10 cents a minute.

Nora, my droid would not work in the UK so I ended up renting a phone from verizon. Your carrier should be able to let you know. A US charger with an adaptor worked fine though.

ita, no because I was told it wouldn't work on my phone. I wanted to be able to make calls in the UK and to home. So, renting seemed like a good idea. It was $19.95 plus $1 a minute. So, I used it sparingly.

Amazon did add a bunch of streaming content but it's still way behind Netflix.
It's not terribly user friendly to go searching for things. There's no way to search alphabetical within a category and show seasons aren't grouped together.
