I've heard The Chicago Diner is supposed to be excellent and very family-friendly, but it's not downtown (3411 N. Halsted).
I quite enjoy the Chicago Diner. But be forewarned: every time I have been there, the service has been S-L-O-W. Not a place to go if you are really hungry or have to be somewhere afterwards.

It's taken me three hours to eat my lunch. I keep getting distracted. I still have an orange to eat. At this point, it seems like work.
I may have to take a stroll down to the pharmacy at lunchtime to get some breathing drugs.
Or just to escape the guy over the cube walls, who I can hear chewing his lunch. It's just..it's a pretty high wall, and I shouldn't be able to hear a sandwich and whatever he's drinking.

The funny think is that the one of the Darlings in my generation is named Michael Darling, and he is impossible to google!
