Trying to find a way to escape without causing a scene.
Man, screw that. If the escape is a success then the scene will happen in your absence anyway, so you won't have to witness it or deal with it (at least not on your damn birthday). Just go.
eta: And maybe a scene wouldn't be so bad for them. My mom always told me that her relationship with her own mother didn't start to seriously improve until Nana stepped way over the line and my mom said, "I may be your daughter, but I'm a grown human being and I don't need to tolerate someone treating me like that," and cleared out and stayed away until Nana made the first overture.
Some parents need a loud, clear, "There's the bullshit line and you stepped over it, and I'm done until you walk it back" walkout to make the relationship happen on your terms rather than theirs.

last year, IIRC, and said it was great. I would totally go see it.
My father implied that he was paying for his contribution to my college (I paid some too, and so did my mother, and I had loans), but I later found out that my grandmother gave him the money for it. I mean, my mother's father helped her out with her share of my tuition, but a) I knew about it and b) my mother taught high school, while my father is a doctor. An extremely cheap-ass doctor.
Also, didn't you graduate from college like, 15 years ago? And are supporting yourself as a gainfully employed and all-around grownup adult person? NOW he makes a fuss?
Hil went to see Newsies last year, IIRC, and said it was great. I would totally go see it.
Yeah, I saw it when it was playing at the Papermill Playhouse in NJ, before the Broadway run, and it was really good. There was one plot thing that they changed from the movie where I liked the movie version better, but I'm not sure I would have said "I don't like this plot point" if I hadn't known the way it was in the movie. And the dancing was all incredible.
There are several SYTYCD alums in Newsies--Alex, Evan, and a few others I can't think of because I'm WAY too freaking irritated at the IT department of my current company. Jesus.
Several of the guys from SYTYCD are dancers with the current show.
Allyson, we get in to Logan at 9am and failing any 5 year old meltdown are probably going straight to the museum, which I think opens at 10. If you want to meet up message me on FB and I'll send you my mother's cell (we won't have our own phone.)
It hasn't been completely awful. Stayed over at the ex boyfriend's last night and had sexytimes after vodka and the muppet movie and then he took me for breakfast. I'm going to block out everything else about this trip.
