Sometimes I think I might just move up to Vermont, open a bookstore or a vegan restaurant. Adam Schlesinger, z''l

I've never been to a black stylist. Some people suggested it when I was a kid, after seeing some particularly horrendous things done to my hair by white stylists, but my mother always said no.

I'm still annoyed about one class picture where each kid was given one of those little fine plastic combs. I usually just ignored the combs, since I knew they wouldn't do anything on my hair, but one year, one of the parent volunteers decided to comb all the girls' hair, and she wouldn't listen when I said no, so I'm in that picture with my hair a massive ball of frizz, sticking out at least six inches on each side of my head.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

If you check your call log and find that your family has called you four times in as many minutes, isn't that going to make you think something's up? And "Well, you weren't answering!" isn't much of an reason? Yeah, I'm not answering, and you're not leaving messages. Being unable to get to the phone isn't world-ending (is it, Polgara?) I've told them to not do that anymore. One and done, please leave message, unless something is wrong.

Every now and then, I think I might actually be a little odd.

I've never known what to do with my hair. If I brush it, it frizzes. If I comb it, it frizzes. If I touch it, it frizzes. If I move while it's drying, it frizzes. There's no way I'm gonna spend an hour in the morning blowdrying and straightening my hair. Anyway, I don't really want it to be straight; I like my curls, I just wish they weren't so hard to please.

Wait, is this real-world child support, where the money goes to buy food for the kids, or MRA fantasyland child support where the women just buy Ferraris and cocaine? -Jessica

I don't know if it will help you, zenkitty, but when I went to the curly hair place, she said to just bunch up paper towels and blot the water out. When i do this, it frizzes way less. You can also use an old t-shirt. Something about the nap of towels brings on the frizz.

Really? Hm. Paper towels are cheap, and I have plenty of old t-shirts. I'm gonna try that! Thanks, Allyson.

The best products I've found for getting my hair to be curly but not frizzy are the kids' products from Mixed Chicks.

I'm initially suspicious of advice like this, but the old t-shirt or paper towel thing didn't require me to buy anything new, and she blotted it with paper towels at the salon. Damn it, it does help.

"And to be clear, I am the hell. And the high water."

Zenkitty,

I have been using some Lush products on my hair that might work for you. There is a crème for the hair post-shampoo that really does a nice job with curl definition.
