Happy Birthday Tommy!

I took a much-needed day off yesterday, went to Memphis to have dinner with my cousin at a Mediterranean/Italian place, and then saw Spring Awakening. I think 2007 must have been a very weak year for Broadway if this got so many raves and awards. The story was powerful, but aside from the grand finale I didn't think much of the music. And I don't think it was a matter of poor performances (aside from the nails-on-chalkboard voice of the guy playing Lawrence).

Oh well, at least happy I got out and went to see live theatre, even if I wasn't happy with the play itself. And pairing it with visiting a relative and eating excellent food means I'm not disgruntled about the time and gas spent on the drive over like I would have been if it were for the show alone.

Every now and then, I think I might actually be a little odd.

Happy birthday, tommyrot!

Jessica, good grief, German measles?! I hope it isn't really, because, fuck.

The "music to play at my memorial service" convo is making me laugh. I don't want hymns, but what else could they play? Can't think of anything - my favorite songs aren't appropriate. But the only people likely to outlive me won't care if I don't have a service, and I don't care, because I probably won't be there. Although I might leave a little money just for them to hire a guy to sit in the back and yell "Freebird!" and hold up a lighter.

Wait, is this real-world child support, where the money goes to buy food for the kids, or MRA fantasyland child support where the women just buy Ferraris and cocaine? -Jessica

I finally defriended the unhinged conservative on my list after he just posted a very funny picture of a bear begging for food, the text comparing poor people who use food stamps to animals. It makes me sad that he's raising a child.

ETA: It really hit it out of the park for me, that it isn't lack of understanding, or ignorance, it's cruelty that drives these people. They're just soulless, cruel people, who take joy in cruelty.

Sometimes I trip on how happy we could be.

Ta-Nehisi Coates wrote some great stuff a couple of weeks ago about that very thing.

Sounds like a good outing, Matt, and you know the general state of Broadway is terrible, so yeah, there are a couple of decent new things in a given year and one of them has to be crowned Awesome.

I love Coates. I just discovered how much I like his writing a few months ago and have been gradually picking through the archives.

I should clarify when i say "they" are cruel. I don't mean conservatives as a group. I can't imagine any of the conservatives I'm close to would make fun of the poor. They think they have better ways of helping the poor, and they're fucking wrong as hell, but they do in fact think that poverty is tragedy and their hearts ache about it.

Picking on the poor? What is fucking WRONG with people?

I'm excited he's getting so much attention, because I was a fan of his a million years ago, when he was at the Washington City Paper.

Picking on the poor? What is fucking WRONG with people?

They're such losers that they have to find some group to mock in order to not dwell on their extreme loserness. I guess it's better for them to mock online than go out and kick puppies.
