I should clarify when i say "they" are cruel. I don't mean conservatives as a group. I can't imagine any of the conservatives I'm close to would make fun of the poor. They think they have better ways of helping the poor, and they're fucking wrong as hell, but they do in fact think that poverty is tragedy and their hearts ache about it.

Some really do have a negative assessment of poor folks and think of them beneath contempt.
