Okay, a cursory google says that on a month-to-month lease in Illinois, they have to give you 30 days, which starts from the first business day AFTER they give you the notice (meaning, if they gave it to you on a Saturday or Sunday, the 30 days wouldn't start until that following Monday).
Unless they gave notice at the end of January, they can't tell you now that you have to be out by February 28.
t edit
I posted that before you posted about when they gave notice. They're still shafting you on the 30 days, if they gave it to you at the beginning of February, since it's a short month.
Illinois is one of the better states with regard to tenant rights and responsibilities. You might need to check out the docs in your county, but there are fixed dates to which Tep alluded.
I need to double check when I found that sign. It's been stressful and my tendency to avoid and be in denial is not helping me.
BTW, I'm not necessarily recommending this, but in many places, it can take awhile to evict a person. So you might want to check out your rights regarding when they can kick you out. This may not work to your advantage since you will be looking for another place to live and they will probably want to contact your last/most recent landlord.
Yeah, it sucks, sumi, but you're going to have be active about this one.
It was the end of January - so they've given me more than 30 days but I had some hope that I'd be able to negotiate something
sumi,
here is a good link that may help you get started.

Thank you.
In addition, my best friend's father is dying. She and her sisters are essentially just sitting vigil.
And I went to the memorial service for a close friend of another one of y close friends.
Well, I have google some apartments and one of them got back to me. . so that's something.
I've been given notice that they will not allow me to stay and I have until Feb 28th to get out.
Oh, sumi, I'm so sorry. We were literally just there. (We're at my parents' temporarily.) It is hugely stressful, but your best bet is to start looking for something immediately, and get out. By doing it this way, they're not giving you an official eviction notice, which some rental places will ask about later, and even though actual eviction can take time, there are ways for a landlord to get around it (as we found out the hard way).
All kinds of ~ma and many hugs.
