Emmett's mom had a no-gun toys rule. But I did not and we had many many enjoyable battles with Nerf dart guns and (on rare hot days in SF) with squirt guns. It's fun.
Emmett is still not a homicidal maniac.

We had squirty things that were shaped like elephants, and the water came out the trunk.
I got the impression that these were out too. I don't remember anyone making a big deal out of them when I was a kid as long as they weren't the black ones that actually looked like guns.

Yeah, I can see objecting to the realistic-looking ones (if for no other reason than that there have been horrible stories about cops and the fake guns and tragic results), but I wouldn't be a parent who was all "No nerf guns! No squirt guns! Nothing gun-ish!" so who knows
