If it's in a subject you're interested in, but you feel like you didn't get the knowledge, personally I'd ask around, see if you can find a prof for that class who has a student-friendly rep and say "Look, I took this class yonks ago, but I was in a bad place, and I didn't learn much. Now, they gave me the credit and I don't have the money to audit. Is there anyway I could sit in silently?"
I would absolutely say yes to a student who asked this. I might secretly think that I'd never see the student after the second week of class, but then I'd be pleasantly surprised if the student did actually stay and learn.
But I want to take college algebra just so can triumph over my nemesis.
