5 weeks would be hard, Kate. I say take more time even if it's unpaid if you can afford it.
Oh, I can't imagine going back after only 5 weeks, and we're lucky to have enough in savings to make it feasible for me to take several weeks unpaid. I just hate that the official paid leave is so little. Somehow I thought that 12 weeks was common, but now I'm not sure where I got that number.
I have nothing but the highest respect for the doctors and nurses I've worked with (with one or two exceptions), but I wish the committees that decide which ailments and conditions are covered would come down with those same conditions and have to use our insurance.

Indeed.
It does not help that Congresspeople in D.C. have top notch insurance and day care. As well they should, mind you, but please have a little perspective.
I look back on when I had K-Bug and I was back to work almost immediately. I didn't have any maternity benefits. Was working for H&R Block. K-Bug was born in late March and I remember the crush of tax season. Granted, I took her to work with me and the ladies in the back office would watch over her for me.
That's the thing. We have some of the best medical care in the world in the United States, which some of the shittiest access to that care.
ChiKat,
I think everyone should have excellent preventative care and very good medical care for all else. I don't think any country's health system (especially not one the size of the US) could sustain the quality of care that say Obama, GW Bush, and especially Cheney have all received.
For example, Cheney has 1-2 attendants with him at all times to tend to his heart if he has a problem. I don't think he is paying for that out of pocket.

I think it could sustain the quality of care that Congresspeople get, though.

Has, meaning today, and not while he was VP? Do you have anything to back that up? See here: [link] Cheney's not getting anything better than that, unless he's paying for it himself.
do you really think so? The 60 minutes expose on the daycare they received was enlightening. I know the country could not sustain that. At all.
