Raq, amych, Suzi, yeah -- I won't lie, there are pros and cons to freelancing, and it is a hell of a lot of work to get started and get gigs, but it is absolutely the right choice for certain people.
But you really have to be a self-starter and learn how to promo yourself while walking (and sometimes tripping over) the fine line of "promo self" and "being a jackhole."
There's this chick on Twitter -- no one we know -- who had pimped her ebook 8 times a day for the past week! Same tweet every damn time.

I spent the evening at a local freelancer's event with a good girlfriend of mine, and met some cool people, and then went home with my friend and we sat on the porch and gabbed for a couple of hours. And then walking out, there were two deer, a mama and a baby, just casually walking down the sidewalk. Didn't startle; were just ambling nonchalantly down the sidewalk in the middle of Kansas City! It was so cool!
And I NEEDED a night away from the house and the computer and garage sale prep. It was lovely.

Hil, I'm glad you have fruity beer to help you deal with all these screw ups where you work.
We're in Bath, which is lovely as usual. We went to the Jane Austen museum today and then took a bus around the city. The friends we're staying with are having a baby! It was a pleasant surprise to find out when we got here; although if I knew ahead of time I wouldn't have brought a bottle of wine as a gift.
