I was told to buy a respirator.

That if the dust is breathed it can harm the lungs. Is that not true?
If you breath in clouds of it, like any particulate. I mean, I wouldn't snort it or throw a bag into a fan.... And apparently the pool kind is altered in a way that is crystalline silica, so I'm guessing silicosis would be an issue. If you snorted it.
But people eat the stuff. And it's been used as a dewormer in livestock.
Now I'm envisioning the little fossilized diatoms coming to life and wielding tiny swords and killing the ants that way.
They are wee tiny swords!

AFAIK, that is true. It's also true for Borax.
Now I'm envisioning the little fossilized diatoms coming to life and wielding tiny swords and killing the ants that way. PLEASE DO NOT TELL ME OTHERWISE.
It is even better than that, because they are tiny fossil zombie vampire diatoms that suck the very life out of any ants with whom they come into contact.
It really doesn't create clouds of dust. And it doesn't seem to go through the vacuum filter. Material safety sheet from somewhere: [link]
It really doesn't create clouds of dust.
Have you tried using it outside in a breeze? I always feel like I manage to stand in the direction of the cloud.
Adam and the Ants' "Antmusic" just came up on my iPhone. IT IS A SIGN.
Adam Ant offers the advice that you should neither tread on them nor cut off their heads. Diatomaceous earth seems to get a pass.
The fossilized diatoms are sort of like tiny swords, in that they're very sharp. That's why you should be careful with diatomaceous earth, because the sharp particles can irritate the mucous membranes. It's not terribly dangerous, but you shouldn't throw it about wildly.
That's like throwing it in a fan! So yeah, I don't use it in wind.
