Eggs are a sign of fertility, as are rabbits, and they became intertwined with Easter, which is close to May Day or Beltane on May 1st. It's a holiday focusing on fertility, regeneration of the earth (and May Poles (big phallic symbol), flower gathering and generally celebration focusing on fertility and rebirth, and hence SEXXORING, ZOMG!). The church officials tried to link pagan festivities to Christian holidays.
That's pretty much why Christ's bday (Xmas) was set for 12/25, because it corresponded neatly with winter solstice (12/21, generally) (aka Yule, hence Yule logs and Christmas trees), not because anyone had any freakin' idea when Christ's bday actually was.

ION, does anyone have experience with phlox? I want those gorgeous cascades and large bunches of phlox I'm seeing in gardens, but the little plastic thingies say plant then 6" from each other. Can I plant them a little closer to get that blanket of flowers effect I want? Or do I stick with the 6" things (heh, heh, heh, six inches thing...) and they will spread out naturally? Exactly. For me it's just a day of peace in the grocery stores since so many people are at church. I don't know what these people were thinking. It's made for a fun morning with DH, though.
I like my spheres plastic and filled with chocolate.

There's phlox in my raised-bed garden. The person who lived here before me planted it, not me. It seems to spread pretty quickly. If the directions say plant them 6" apart, I'd go with that. The root systems of the individual plants may need that much "territory". I'm planning to move mine to the steep slope at the side, to stop erosion, and get it out of the raised bed before it takes over.
Erin, I would stick with the six inches. IME they grow like mad so you should get the cover you're looking for.

I was in December. I haven't seen him since Virginia Woolf went to DC. I'll try to remember for our next encounter though.

Cool! Thanks, guys! I'm making a Home Despot run, as I want more phlox, and I'm also going to paint a wicker loveseat the ex left behind in the garage, and use it on the back desk for seating this summer. I'm thinking a sunny yellow -- I found some inexpensive cushions that have kind of a greeny fern print (not my fave, but price, weatherproofing and fit are my main considerations.)
ER visit didn't help. Which makes the second consecutive that didn't help. More than tiresome.

I painted the door a second time and filled 4 pots with flowers. I'm filthy, so will shower and then clean the house. If the weather still holds, I'll go for a walk.
Mister Kitty had an episode today. He came downstairs all wet like he'd tripped in his waterdish and was staggery and floppy. Stuffed some corn syrup in him (thank god I kept the syringes from when last I had to liquid medicate the cats) and half a can of food. He's perky enough to rouse himself to go back upstairs. Not fun. If it persists, will need to take him to the vet, though not much they can do except maybe adjust his insulin. Plus, have a conference next week which is going to play havoc with my schedule.
Anyway.
Need to motivate. Now.
