When I was a kid, I had one dresser and one small closet, and it was plenty of room for the relatively few items of clothing I had.

Yeah, me too. But we knew we wouldn't be getting any smaller, and our mom's did the purging that we won't do. And in my case (and a few other folks here) we were pretty broke and it was a struggle to have enough clothing at all.

I'm just weak-willed when it comes to cheap or free clothes. When a dress is $5, I feel like it won't matter if I only wear it a couple of times. And at swaps I take home a lot of stuff I *might* wear, and half of it ends up going back to the next swap unworn. So this happens (and that's actually an old picture-- it's stuffed with even more clothes now!)

Does anyone else buy things that don't match anything they own? And then think, oh, I'll find a blouse that goes with this skirt, and you never do, but you can't quite bring yourself to get rid of the skirt just yet. Because something that matches still might come your way.

I went through Casper's drawers this afternoon, anticipating the switch to summer clothes, and discovered she has about 10,000 t-shirts. She's 7! How did that happen?

I try never to do that anymore, but it doesn't always work.

My clothing organization system as far as it goes: I have a small walk-in closet in my bedroom. On side has pants, skirts, dresses on it. The other side had tops and jackets. Shelves above for scarves, some hooks for belts, bags accessories. A dress outside the closet for undies, socks, swimsuits, yoga stuff, pjs. Closet in the spare room has whatever is out of season...I trade stuff in and out twice a year.

Truth is there's usually a laundry basket with a big pile of clothes on top of it on the floor, which I pick through in the morning.

I try to be ruthless about purging clothes on a semi-regular basis. Often I am more less than ruth. But it does help a bit with space. There is only one thing I have ever regretted purging...a black wool dress. Otherwise I always find it freeing to get rid of stuff. I also try to go through phases where I don't let myself buy any more clothes unless I have to. I have two closets full of clothes...I can probably find something to wear.

That is one thing I am pretty good about, most of my clothes go with each other. Looking at my wardrobe, you would think I spent a lot of time in resorts or on cruises or something - everything can be put into little mix-and-match sets to cover several days with a few pieces. Somehow it all adds up to way too much clothing, even so.

OTOH, I haven't bought new clothes or even wished I had something I didn't have in rather a while, so maybe this is exactly the right amount of clothes for me.

I purged so much stuff before we moved. And right now I can feel the things I didn't wear all winter sitting there, judging, taking up room. I try to purge every time I switch over, and it's been incredibly freeing to do it every time.

"Someone is wrong on the Internet." Someone tell me to let it go.

I feel like the closet in my bedroom is big, but that's just because it's about twice as wide as the basically door-width closet I grew up with. So I have that and a dresser and a small set of shelves with sweaters in it, and that's where my clothes are. And I'm still getting rid of stuff I don't wear!

I haven't been able to do a proper wardobe purge in almost 2 years due to being pregnant and not wearing anything but maternity clothes. In theory, I do the thing where once a year I turn all the hangers in my closet backwards, and only turn them around again once I've worn that piece of clothing so it's easy to see at a glance what I haven't worn in a year and get rid of that. In practice, I wear about 5% of the clothes I own and ignore the rest in hopes that they will go away on their own.
