When I was living in Boston I was always surprised by the Marathon. It seems like I'd always turn a corner and be confronted by the wheelchair racers blowing by. (In San Francisco I'm always surprised by Folsom Street Fair which usually involves getting off Muni with people dressed in leather chaps.)
On TCM this morning they had a thirties melodrama, Comet Over Broadway, and I though the supporting actress Minna Gombell looked a lot like brenda.
So for those of you keeping score at home. Here are the Buffistas who look like movie stars:
brenda is Minna Gombell;
Scrappy is Ann Sheridan;
and, megan walker is Diane Baker.
And, according to the top American finisher, apparently the way to win races is prayer. So now you know.
I guess that explains how winners are able to give 110% - it's literally a miracle!
Also, Chuck Schumer just sent out a form email basically saying "Thanks for letting me know you care about Planned Parenthood. Um, I'm already a Democrat, so...yeah."
I had no idea you had to qualify for the Boston Marathon. Do you have to for the other big ones, too?
I knew you had to qualify for the Boston Marathon because I remember that Rosie Ruiz had to cheat at the NYC Marathon before she could cheat in Boston. One of the ways she got busted was that someone remembered seeing her on the subway during the NYC Marathon.
two ALA READ posters (Nathan Fillion and Rachel Maddow)
Could I possibly snag these?
You can get into New York via a lottery or by doing certain things with the New York Road Runners Club (run and volunteer): [link]
Also, wait a minute--don't you have to apply for the Boston Marathon, and have a time better than X (I forget what it is) to be allowed to run? How do you get in without having run one before?
I think you have to finish an official qualifying marathon in under 5 hours. There are bunch you have to qualify for and some, like NY, that you have to enter a lottery to get into.
Suddenly I see the advantage of living in a monarchy.
Technically, I live in a monarchy and we do not have the day off. Am I bitter? Yes! Do I really care about the Royal Wedding? No.
looks at Ann Sheridan photo. Sits up a little straighter and preens a bit.
I already have Fridays off, and I plan to be up and watching the wedding.
In Utah, they don't give days off for Catholic holidays, which is what several locals think Easter is. Some of them actually have to think for a moment to remember what Easter represents (and they wonder why some people don't consider Mormons to be Christian). When I mention that in some areas it's a holiday-worthy occasion, they actually look baffled.
