I am data crunching the last two years of this event. I find data fascinating. Average # of bids on each item (thus far, I'm about halfway through) is only 4, I think that is a good sign that they have too many items and not enough participation.

Depends on who's doing the valuing. Sometimes donors over estimate the value.

I've never seen auction items go for a percentage-ish tjing. It's how interested you can get bidders. Momentum leads to monies.

Gosh values seem so wildly varying to me. Certain things go way over value, others are absurdly underbid. I don't know. The one thing I've seen is that GCs tend to go for their face value or maybe a smidge over.

Start the items at 1/3 to 1/2 their value, and if there are no bids for a good long time, cut 'em down further. It's hard to predict, people will get crazy competitive on random stuff and other things you think will go for a lot... don't. IME. ...that may not have been the question you asked, but I hope it's helpful.
