I don't mean to make light of the government shutdown, but I do have a question. If the government shuts down for 1-2 weeks, what happens to tax collection?

You still have to submit your federal taxes or a request for an extension by April 18th. Otherwise you will be charged penalties for filing late.
Those that have submitted paper returns, OTOH? Good luck in getting your refund if there's a shutdown.

Whoa, bizarro weather. There's been thunder all afternoon, which is unusual for here, then it suddenly started hailing, or seemed to, but when I ran out to move my plants under cover I realized what I thought was hail was accumulating like snow, and even soft. I think it's just rain, now.
Eta: no, that's definitely hail. It makes me feel better knowing there's a severe weather advisory, except for the possibility of funnel clouds part. Do not like.
