I have absolutely no clue what was the first 45/album I bought. I would have been a kid, around 9 or so, so it was probably something easy-listening-ish like Little River Band or Air Supply.

When I reread Lord of the Rings after taking a class on medieval lit, I was blown away by the depth that I saw, so much more than when I first read it at age 15. Also, over the years, I've grown to love the second halves of both TTT and RotK with Frodo, Sam, and Gollum, whereas before I was more enamored with the other books which concentrated on Rohan (Eomer, mmmmm) and the Ents with Merry and Pippin.

Can't remember what 45 I bought first, because I had a zillion of them, but I do remember either Supertramp's Breakfast in America or Fleetwood Mac's Rumors was the first album I bought with my own money.
I wasn't supposed to buy the "Afternoon Delight" 45, because my mom objected, but I did anyway and claimed I forgot. I also had no idea until much later what they were talking about.
