Gunsmoke was the longest-running show on television for some time. Not sure if it still holds the record. James Arness played Sheriff Matt Dillon, who had the world's longest and chastest romance with a brothel madam ever.
He also played the gruff mountain-man uncle in How the West Was Won, in the late 70s/early 80s.
