Seriously, Canada?!?!
What?
It's a little more complicated than that, and I don't understand all the details. The feds only pay 55% of income if eligible. (Mat leave benefits are actually receiving Employment Insurance benefits.) Usually, a full time employee's mat leave is topped up by her employer for a portion of the year. I think my employer tops up to 100% for 35 weeks, but the other 17 are at 55%, so some people can't afford to take the full year. I do know one person who works for a very progressive employer where mat leave is topped up for the whole year.
We get 12 weeks, through my job, and count it lucky! That woman had been living with her parents, so 55% of salary would probably be fine.
You guys, my bank upgraded me to a platinum card. I feel all fancy and grown up.
Seriously, Canada?!?!
Believe you me, there are times when (Canadian-born) FAQWife bemoans our not living there. Especially, for obvious reasons, recently.
this woman is a single mother about to finish her YEAR of maternity leave?? Seriously, Canada?!?!
One of my Canadian coworkers (in the TO office) had three kids really close together and she was working about two months a year for three year in a row. Seemed like a very civilized way to do it!
Every time one of my British coworkers asks how much leave I took they're
horrified
to learn that we only get twelve weeks. And then doubly horrified when I explain how relatively generous that is compared to most US employers.
In France it's even more generous, I think, and I know all pre-natal care is covered by the government.
Until I did the time zone math and then looked more closely at the text, ESPN2 freaked me out for a few seconds when they flashed a story about Soderling beating Nadal in an upset. Yeah, two years ago, ESPN!
Shrift, buy us stuff!
Hey, I didn't get this platinum card by buying stuff!
...wait.
One of the many things I hate about Arizona(trust me, there's a list) is that after I posted a letter to the editor, somebody thought they were really cutting me off at the knees(also redundant) by saying I wanted a cradle-to-grave government.Like it would be the awfullest, most emasculating thing ever if people felt they had someplace to turn when they were in trouble.
I might have debated further if, like, my choice of parents and my college major from twelve years ago weren't also found wanting.
