I'm having kind of a bad day -- it turned out two !!! of my references for the job that started calling them have moved. One of them joined the Peace Corps and is in South Africa, so I don't think they're going to be able to get her on the phone soon. The other I'm waiting on, I have a number that I can pass on, but only when they get back to me.
I'm glad I checked my SPAM folder -- unfortunately they sent it last Friday but I didn't see it until this morning.
References are so hard for that. For the longest time, I was giving the email of my first boss, who had since moved to Argentina. But she was my best reference!

Suzi, I think bat mitzvahs are usually a gift-giving thing. I've never been to one, though, so I'm not sure about the kind of gift. Maybe a gift certificate somewhere he'd like?
