Pix, I wish you could farm out your work to us!
Cass, yes, to everything you've said about Japan's engineering, preparedness, and infrastructure. Like Julia Sweeney says, "and then God says "ha!"

Just had a protest poop.
Pretty much sums up my week, no?
Just had a protest poop
are you referring to yourself or the cat?
or...both?
"Do you want to tweet about it? I'll help you compose a tweet...if you like."
"Do you want to tweet about it? I'll help you compose a tweet...if you like."
Fizzy water out of my nose.
Happy birthday a little late, tommy!
"Do you want to tweet about it? I'll help you compose a tweet...if you like."
Oh god, that commercial cracks me up.
You guys are just upping my week FAIL. MK protest poop, damnit!
I need to stop reading about the nuclear plant, because many people are wrong on the internet. Also, right now people are wrong on ABC. There is no China syndrome. Putting Three Mile Island and Chernobyl in the same sentence is insane. Chernobyl had no containment. Chernobyl was graphite-moderated, an early technology not used in the West. Graphite burns. Also, it was being operated by insane people who deliberately turned off the safety systems.
This is extremely minor, but irritating. CNN.com says:
Potentially dangerous problems in cooling radioactive material appear to have cropped up there, as well as at another of the Tokyo Electric Power Company’s nuclear plants. Both plants are named Fukushima Daiichi and both have nuclear reactors, but they are separate facilities.
Uh, no. There are two plants in Fukushima prefecture, Fukushima Daiichi (I), a six-unit plant, and Fukushima Daini (II) a four-unit plant. It's a little hard to tell, but it looks like Fukushima Daiichi units 3-6 were already shut down for a scheduled outage and units 1-3 were affected by the loss of power. Unit 1 is the one in the most trouble.
because many people are wrong on the internet
They really, really are.
There was a guy who was being histrionic-ish on BBC. I Googled his org and realized he was not News, he was Public Relations. But really I only checked because he was so wrong on the tv. A lot of people might believe him talking about China syndrome, which, yes, he said was possible in Japan...
Ginger,
units 3-6 were already shut down for a scheduled outage and units 1-3 were affected by the loss of power
This is consistent with the careful reporting I have read.
