I was listening to the show on NPR yesterday and thought it was relevant to us.
I am in tax-prep hell. My paperwork is so disorganized this year, plus I have the two states to file, and the self-income thing for 4 months and I don't even know what to do for the sale and purchase of homes. as of right now I owe federal and am getting a NY State refund. Almost a complete wash. I am pretty sure I have more medical expenses and charitable donations I can claim, though, just must find the paperwork.
Texas doesn't have income tax.
yeah I know, that makes it n% easier than when I moved NM to NY mid-year.
I just cleaned out my files (and had to buy a new shredder). I realized I have tax returns back to 1992. I should only need to keep 10 years, right?
Ah, I thought you meant NY & TX.
NYS is the worst, apparently.
You can get past returns from the gov't these ways [link] if you don't want to hang on to the paper (notice there is a-pretty hefty-fee for the processed copy).
I need to find about $100.00 more of medical receipts and I'll hit my medical claim deduction. Off to search the kitchen for papers.
