Family name on my mom's side - belonging to a great-great-grandmother and a great-aunt who died as a child. Knowing me as you do, can you guess which one my perverse brain focussed on?
HKF's name has some literary influences, some mythology, but mostly we liked the way it sounded, and when we met her, it fit.
I wasn't named after anyone in particular, but apparently my parents had just spoken my name earlier in the pregnancy. When my mom was in the labor room, my dad was sitting next to her, writing "Kathryn" on a piece of paper. Mom looked over and asked, "What's that?" "Um, that's the name if it's a girl." "Huh, I was thinking 'Katherine'. But that spelling is good, too."
If I was a boy, I would have been Daniel. My sister, Kristine, would have been Keith, and my brother, Kip, would have been Kimber Leigh.
How did your parents pick your name? Were you named after anybody?
Only slightly - there was an Amalia in the holocaust generation, but it's more of a nice reference than directly "we named you after your darling Auntie". Claire was purely a matter of liking the sound of it.
My dad picked out my name - I think before my parents were married he had an idea of names for kids. I've never asked where he got the Allison from but Skye is for the Isle of Skye (ancestors are from there so the story goes).
Mom picked out my brother's name - there was some debate about his first name because my uncle was dating a girl with same name and her sister had a dog with the name. But she held firm and this story is the only reason anyone mentions the girlfriend or the dog. His middle name is the same as my Dad's.
My nephew - got his original first name because my bro and xSIL liked it. Then my SIL decided it wasn't enough so they expanded it and he became Evander. She'd actually never heard of Evander Holyfield (that's the first person anyone thinks of when they hear his name). Nephew's middle name is the same as my Bro's and Dad's.
My parents were having so much trouble trying to agree on two names that they decided just to agree on one that worked for a boy or a girl. I don't think they realized how popular Jessica was/would be.
My plans for the weekend are a possible date tonight, a massage tomorrow, and lots of staying inside. And then family Sunday dinner, per usual.
I was supposed to be Rebecca until my mom had one in the second grade class she was teaching who was apparently the devil's own spawn. I think Amy was just because they liked it, but my middle name, Elizabeth, is for my great-grandmother. I was her first great-grandchild.
I don't know exactly how my name came about, just that my parents had a choice between two starting letters based on the lunar cycle or whatever. I forget what the other one was.
I was wondering if "Polter-Cow" was a family name, or what.
Meeting an internet axe murderer for coffee.
How did your parents pick your name?
After my sister was born, my parents had tons of people come up and say, "oh, I have a sister/brother/friend/great uncle twice removed named [sister's name]", so they decided to find a name that was unusual enough for that not to happen.
Then they discovered the new president of my dad's university was also named Lee.
