I was name after my uncle Tom.
A few years ago I mentioned that to him and he was surprised - apparently no one told him?
My middle name is John, named after some relative of my dad's.

If my second son had been a girl, her mommies would have named her after my friend Miriam. That would have been cool.
Instead, they named a pet mouse after her.
My brother, sisters and I are all named after revolutionary types. I'm named after Louise Michel, who had some pretty great nicknames: the red virgin of Montmartre and the French grand dame of anarchy.
I was called "it". And then I was called "ita." Thankfully they waited 20+ years to tell me that. I have a cousin whose name was similarly coined, and I swear it factored into her psychological makeup. In no positive way.
How did your parents pick your name? Were you named after anybody?
Well, after giving my sister and brother the most common names imaginable, naming them after two of my Dad's siblings (my Dad was partly raised by his older siblings since his parents died when he 6 and 13), I think my mother put her foot down and insisted I have a French name. But the lack of creativity continued and she chose the most popular name of the decade in France. So, we actually all have totally boring, utterly common names, mine just seems exotic here.
I almost hate to mention Limbaugh here, but is this a new low for him? Limbaugh Mocks Chinese President's Untranslated Speech
Yeah, he was making fun of the Chinese president for speaking a language that wasn't English, because it sounded funny to him.
Everyone thinks I was named after Erica Kane.(my great-grandma, who looked for reasons to lose her shit, pretty much, told my mom she was terrible for naming her daughter after such a vixen. Which made my mom love it more, as anyone who actually knows my mom would know, even though she didn't know Erica Kane.) My mom liked it cause you can't shorten it or make it cute...my grandma tried, though "Oh, you could call her Ricki," Um, no, you can't. The early seventies were an Erica-riffic era(mine is the German spelling)
I don't know exactly how my name came about, just that my parents had a choice between two starting letters based on the lunar cycle or whatever. I forget what the other one was.
Tomorrow I am attending a friend's Hitchcock marathon, then seeing an improv show. On Sunday, a friend is having a potluck.
