Before I start yelling at people on the internets, have there been political assassinations or national news murders that were thought to be because of politically left tenor at the time. Whether or not the killers were actually motivated by it or not.

Maybe in Europe. Like Baader Meinhof was left. But be careful anyway, because one friend of this guy says he was actually very liberal.

Wow, I just turned on my computer for the first time since last night. I had no idea about the Congresswoman's shooting. Horrific.

I'll just post about my chili that I finally made tonight, and which is almost done cooking (finally!). I was really surprised by how much liquid showed up by the end of the four-hour cooking time. When I first filled up the slow cooker with the various components, I was thinking I'd have to add some water halfway through, but I'm really glad I didn't now, because it's plenty liquidy. Guess the tomatoes cooked out the liquid. I ended up using 1 20-oz can of crushed tomatoes, 1 14-oz can of diced tomatoes, 1 can of tomato paste, 2 cans of Bush's chili beans (I like lots of beans in my chili), 1.25 pounds of cooked ground turkey, 2 small onions and 1 red bell pepper all chopped up and cooked with the turkey, some salt and pepper, 1 envelope of McCormick's chili seasoning, one or two teaspoons of cumin, and a couple tablespoons of chili powder. I tried to put in some red pepper flake, but the container I had was so old there was no more ooomph to the flakes, so I tossed them instead.

Pretty spicy! I'm having some in a few minutes for a very late dinner, and will see how many containers I can put the rest of it in between the fridge and freezer for later on. I'll see if Dad wants some for lunch tomorrow when he comes up, or if he wants to go out for lunch or early dinner instead.

We're going to see True Grit early in the afternoon, and will be in the same area as one of his favorite restaurants (Wildfire). I'll be able to get something off of their menu, I'm sure, just not our usual before-my-surgery selection of French onion soup and a split chicken caesar's salad.

What did the hard left do after the bombing? Demonize people who bomb federal buildings? Call McVeigh crazy? My memory doesn't recall the left generating a lot of political capital out of the bombing.

That's when all the oppression of the White Christian Males BEGAN.

Yeah, I sometimes suspect I'm your most annoying submitter because I'm so lazy, and I never put descriptions or embed the video or whatever. I'm pretty much cut link, paste link, done! Good news achieved!

On the shooting, I wish we could just have a day or two to grieve the victims and think about the families and survivors and stuff before we had to delve into the politics. I realize that's not how it works when it's political figures involved and in the era of the 24 hour news cycle, but I wish we could just have a day to be sad about the nine year old. You know?

This is a political assassination. Well, attempted - so far. I remember people talking about Jim Brady being shot along with Reagan but Reagan was deffinately the focus and I'm pretty sure I remember Brady because of his subsequent activism. I don't even recall if there was a fatality.

I think the assumption that the motivations are political is a fair one. If that turns out not to be the case then so be it, but its a reasonable place for the freak-out to begin.

The girl was exactly the same age as Deena's Kara.

Thinking about how pointless her death is keeps sending me off crying.

I don't think it ever has. Which doesn't mean it's not how it ought to be. Our world and species is really depressing a lot of the time.
