ION, our landlord is putting her house (where we live) up for sale, so we have been idly considering buying a house. First, we were thinking about her house, but that would be too much- and then we'd be landlords in 2 different states, and I'm pretty scarred by being a landlord in one state already.

Indeed! I feel a little silly about being seduced into the thought of home ownership again, after everything (the cost, the upkeep, the commitment) but I am annoyed about possibly being kicked out of where we've settled because of someone else's decision.

I'm not sure about that, since the Channel wasn't flooded during Katrina/Rita.
It is a buyer's market to some extent, but folks who bought in 2006-08 bought at very high prices, not only because of the general housing price rise, but also because during that time, housing stock here was depleted, therefore, at a premium. So folks are still trying to get back their investment.
It explains the wildly divergent pricing, but I am curious why this particular property is so crazy ass dirt cheap. No lot to speak of, for sure. But is that all? Hmm...
