I just saw this gentleman on the Rachel Maddow Show. Adding the the remarkableness imho is the fact that he is in his early 20s, a Junior in college, and ran toward the shooting to help.
In college, when my professor was trying to make a point about how society had changed, he asked people what they would do if they heard someone calling for help. I spoke up and said I would go see if I could help. He said I was an atavism, a throwback. He said most people would ignore it or call the police.
I've always hoped he was wrong. At least in this case he was.
If someone were just shouting or yelling, no, I probably wouldn't go see what it was at first.
Extended screaming? More likely.
Someone shouting for help? Unless the situation was set up thus that I suspected danger, always.
