Seriously people? Now you're publishing Anne Frank RPF???

See, I don't see this as weird or troubling at all. Do you read other books about the fictionalized lives of famous people? OK, maybe you don't, but there are lots of those published every year that nobody gets too upset about. I know there's been a bit of an uproar about this one, but to me it's no different just because her story was so tragic or she was so young. I've actually been looking forward to reading it.

I need to update some people:

ita - Emmett's been going to Krav camp all week, 9am to 1pm every day. He loves it even more than his regular Krav class. In part because the last hour of the class is with the adult class and it's much more intense. The instructors love him and the owner told Emily that he thought if Emmett kept at this pace he could be an instructor in three years. It's really making him much more buff. His chest is deeper and his shoulders are broader and his arms are beefier.

Vortex (and ita and other people who aren't Perkins) - I was thinking of you when I was stuck for lunch the other day and facing a sad can of black beans. But, we had some bacon in the fridge so I cooked that up, and cut it up and made a bacon and black bean soup. Very garlicky with some fresh salsa, and richer than I've had it before because I didn't waste the bacon grease. Sooooo good.

P-Cow - Have you gone to Grocery Outlet in Berkeley? Holy shit, that's a bargain center. I went in somewhat fearfully expecting Slovenian tinned meat labeled "Skunch." But no! I got Annie's mac and cheese for a dollar a box! There's some intriguing off-brand stuff, of course, but lots of national brands as well. For example, I know which Haagen Dazs ice cream out of the Five line was least successful because they had tons of the Brown Sugar ice cream there. (Now I want to try it.)

Does she? I'm unclear on what actually happens in the book -- everything I've read has been rather vague on the details. (I will report back once I've read it!) But even that doesn't bother me. I mean, she definitely had sexual thoughts & feelings that she recorded in her diary -- not in great detail, though it's certainly possible she self-censored on the topic, thinking that her diary would eventually be read by others. So it doesn't bother me to think of Anne Frank as a sexual being; to me that's one of the most indelible things about her story is that she was a real adolescent girl, with all that implies.

I have not! I do like bargains. I think there's one of those in Oakland too; I pass it all the time on Broadway. But I, too, was wary. Perhaps I will give it a looksee.

For me, that's different from describing it, with people she probably didn't have it with. But I have a huge RPsex squick. I am prudish that way.

I don't, really--though mostly because that's not my thing, admittedly. But I do read some autobiographies--I figure if someone's going to fictionalize it, might as well be the person who did it. I think for me, there's a tangled up bunch of issues--that she was young and might not be cool with this, that she wrote her own story and this is changing it, that she's recent enough that people remember the time (if not necessarily her exactly), etc. I mean...writing about a real person from the 1200s? Queen Eleanor or something? Somehow it being so long ago, and the actual details so shrouded doesn't ping me so. Someone who wrote about themselves but was an adult, or maybe wouldn't so much mind if you made up a story about them having sex? I'm picturing like, Richard Feynman. I've read his writings about himself, and I get the impression he was a wild guy, sometimes a player. If you wrote it about the right period of his life, would he probably have been amused about a story of him hooking up with some chick? Maybe so. (A story of him hooking up with Oppenheimer? Maybe not.) So somehow all that together makes me kinda go "Um, ew?" And more so that it's being published--if Plei wanted to write Anne Frank slash fic and post it on the internet, that wouldn't really squick me at all.

But that's just me and my brain.
