Hey, I have a question for the hivemind: My DH* has insomnia pretty badly, and has just started trying a few different drugs to help him sleep. I forget what the first one was, but it was habit-forming and he decided he'd rather not use it, so now he's trying Ambien. He's tried it two nights in a row and so far it hasn't made any difference. So I have two questions, actually:
(1) Does Ambien sometimes take a few days to kick in properly? Could it possibly need some time to build up in his system?
(2) Is it a bad idea to mix Ambien and Benadryl? He's been using Benadryl for a while; it works OK but he's pretty groggy the next day, so ideally he'd like to find something better. But if, say, he takes an Ambien one night and then wakes up at 3am, is it OK to then take a Benadryl to help him get back to sleep?
*It still feels SO WEIRD that I get to call someone "my DH" now. (Weird but good!)
I for one do not want people handing out drugs to the teachers and throwing under-things at them during lessons.
Well, I think the high school teachers might need the drugs. I was never an panty-tossing type. Perhaps I should rephrase to "paid like rock stars."
Poor Dillo, and poor you, flea!
I would like everyone to know that I am cleaning my faucets and showerheads with vinegar today and therefore I smell like vinegar.
I've never heard of Ambien needing time to build up. Maybe he needs a higher dose.
Ok, Kate, this one I can field.
One, he shouldn't be taking it on a full stomach. Take it at bedtime, and on an empty tum is most efficacious.
Two, is it the generic? If so, what's the manufacturer? My sis and I have a couple of no-go reactions with generic Ambien from certain manufacturers; your DH might be the same way.
What's the dosage -- 5 mg or 10? Is it CR? Cause CR, IMHO, sucks.
If it's 5 mg, have him double it tonight. If it's ten, rather than take a Bendryl, I, personally, would try the empty tum and a glass of wine. No more than that though, and remember, I am not a medical professional, just someone who's been taking it for 8 years.
Eh, I don't have a problem with legally supporting a person's right to make choices while also feeling personally that individual choices are not good ones. If there was a law on the books that would impede Michelle Duggar's right to have 317 children, I would fight it. How I personally feel about her lifestyle is a whole separate issue.
This. Goes along with the whole "disagree with what you're saying but will fight for your right to say it". I find myself in the horribly unfortunate position of agreeing with the evil jackasses who protest at military funerals. I don't think they should, I think what they're saying is ridiculous and hurtful...but saying they can't? Worries me. What if I want to protest at a president's funeral? A celebrity? My deadbeat dad who left me out of the will after not paying child support? Where does the line get drawn?
I take Benadryl and Ambien together without any problem. Benadryl doesn't make me sleepy, though; I take it so that I can still breathe through my nose in the morning. My experience with Ambien is that the right amount puts me to sleep in about 20 minutes and that's it's very dosage sensitive. He might try 1 1/2 and then 2 pills.
Yep, everyone's body is different. If he's a bigger guy, 15 mgs might work better.
Perhaps I should rephrase to "paid like rock stars."
I heartily endorse this plan.
I forget what the first one was, but it was habit-forming and he decided he'd rather not use it, so now he's trying Ambien
Just an FYI, Ambien is habit-forming, too, just not as bad as other sleep aids.
